Tourney thoughts-Day 1, part 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — Eli Savoie @ 2:39 pm

The Memphis Tigers struggled for a long time with Cal St.-Northridge, but I wouldn’t read a whole lot into it. The Tigers weren’t overly impressive in round one last year on their way to the title game. Northridge did what I would expect most Tiger opponents to do by packing in a zone and making Memphis hit shots. Luckily for the Tigers, Roburt Sallie bailed them out my hitting 10 threes. The Tigers can’t expect that again from Sallie, so everyone else has to be better and stay out of foul trouble. I think they will, although I think either second round opponent will be a struggle and I still have the Tigers going out in the Sweet 16.

I hope that Jim Calhoun is ok. Calhoun is not coaching UConn today after coming down with some unspecified illness that, according to CBS, has landed him in the hospital. Assistant George Blaney is coaching the team. Hopefully Calhoun will be back on Saturday, assuming the Huskies advance. Blaney is a capable coach who obviously knows what to do, but it still has to be a distraction when your head coach is not on the bench.

Purdue, one of my final four teams, looks good early in their game but it’s only against Northern Iowa.

Nice win for LSU today. I had picked Butler in that one and after falling behind early the Bulldogs fought back, but the Tigers athleticism was just a little too much.
