The Midnight Rambler

Filed under: Uncategorized — Eli Savoie @ 7:58 pm

Well after 33 exhibition games known as the bowls, we finally had a postseason college football game that mattered as Florida and Oklahoma battled for the BCS Championship. MMR is here with some thoughts on the game and my final top 10 if I had a vote.

– Tim Tebow is amazing! It gets a little sickening sometimes hearing how great of a person he is, and Thom Brennaman’s hyperbole throughout last night’s game made it even worse, but the fact of the matter is that Tebow is one heck of a college football player and one of the great competitors of all time. He quite simply wills his team to victory at times. I don’t think he can be an NFL quarterback because of issues with mechanics and accuracy, but some NFL team will be lucky to have him because he’ll find his way on the field at some position and his competitive fire will help that team win some games.

– Oklahoma’s short yardage package killed them. The obvious case of this was the failed third and fourth down runs from inside the one, but there was another third and less than a yard that they failed to convert that led to a blocked field goal on the next play. I don’t understand why they didn’t use the quarterback sneak in both situations, especially on the third down play at the goal line. If you only need six inches, and you have a big quarterback like Sam Bradford, you should be able to get it every time with a sneak.

– You simply can’t leave 10 points on the field in the first half in a game of this sort and expect to win, and that is what Oklahoma did.

– If that was a less than 100% Percy Harvin I’d hate to see what he could have done at full strength. He is a heck of a player and could be a big time weapon for an NFL team.

– There was a lot of NFL talent on the field last night, but if I was an NFL GM the one player that may excite me the most from this game would be Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham. He is a beast with great hands and decent speed. I think he is going to be special at the next level.

– If I was the Detroit Lions, I’d be putting together a ridiculous package to offer Urban Meyer to come be our head coach. That franchise needs something to create some excitement and Meyer bringing his spread attack to the NFL would do that. Heck, you could easily make a trade with San Francisco to get Alex Smith, who ran the offense under Meyer at Utah, to be your quarterback or if Tebow comes out, you draft him and let him run it.

My Final Top 10
1. Florida
2. Utah
3. USC
4. Texas
5. Oklahoma
6. TCU
7. Alabama
8. Penn State
9. Ohio State
10. Boise State
