Sunday on the Couch!

Filed under: Uncategorized — robfischer @ 3:33 am

USA! USA! USA!  If you listen to MidSouth Golfer the Radio Show (which you should / last edition airs Thursday at 3pm), you’d know that Bob Wolcott and I predicted that the US would win the Ryder Cup.  It’s not as big of a limb as picking Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson, or the Giants over the Patriots, but it was a limb nonetheless.  It’s golf!  If you play well, you can win.  And boy the US boys played well.  I haven’t seen putting like that all year on tour.  I believed that the youth would serve the Americans well.  They had nothing to lose, and frankly, they didn’t know any better.  The rookies (6 in all) were terrific.  Boo and Tony The (stand in) Tiger Kim, and Boo rallied the team and the crowd.  The rookies finished 9-4-7 for the weekend and an impressive 4-1-1 on Sunday.  Plus, they shut down Sergio Garcia.  It was an exciting weekend, which I can’t say about this weekend.  The tour championship provides no drama.  Here’s $10 million Mr. Singh!

Stuart Cink looks a little like a Turkey Hawk, especially with his golf tan on his head.

It’s a shame that the Civil Rights Game is leaving Memphis.  You could sense it happening with Major League Baseball wanting it to be a regular season game.  Everyone points to last year’s crowd, or lack thereof, but the weather was crappy and the Tigers were in the Final Four.  Oh well, I’ll miss the game.  It is nice to see that the Cardinals will make another appearance next year, and if they buy the Redbirds, which is expected soon, they should return every year.  That’s great news for the baseball fans in the Mid South, which is still considered Cardinals Country.

Did you see the Primetime Emmy’s Sunday night?  What the hell is on Tom hanks head?  It looks worse than Marv Albert’s piece!  Julia Louis-Dreyfus looked amazing!

College football thoughts of the weekend:  If USC, Oklahoma, and Georgia all go undefeated (I don’t think they will), which team would be left out of the title game?  It has to be USC, right?  They do play in the pathetic Pac 10!  Freshman AJ Green is the best Georgia receiver since Reggie Brown.  He ACTUALLY CATCHES THE BALL!  Top 3 SEC Heisman candidates: Charles Scott (LSU), Knowshon Moreno (UGA), and believe it or not, Chris Nickson (Vandy).  It’s time to start thinking (if you haven’t already) about BYU as the BCS buster!  They have the nation’s longest winning streak at 14 games, they’ve scored 103 points in their last two, and have posted back to back shutouts for the first time since 1985, a year after they won the national title.  BCS Buster, or National Title Contender??  Their biggest tests will be TCU and Utah on the road.  As stated last week, Jim Tressel made the right call with starting Terrelle Pryor.  At least Ohio State has a different look and might actually be considered a better team at the end of the year, compared to the one that got hammered at USC.  Chase Daniel (Mizzou) is the leader for the Heisman Trophy.  For Florida State fans, you should hope that Jimbo Fisher gets fired before he ever becomes the head coach!  UT should fire Fulmer when they start 2-4 and only 75,000 show up for Northern Illinois next weekend.

NFL Thoughts:  Scott Linehan will be fired next Monday after the Rams get crushed by Buffalo this weekend.  The Rams have a bye next week, so the timing is perfect.  If the Rams played the Browns, who would win?  The Rams have had 31 draft picks since 2000, and only one has been to the Pro Bowl (Steven Jackson).  Don’t brush off the Titans.  Their defense might just be good enough to win the division.  Would Kerry Collins be a future hall of famer if he won his Super Bowl appearance?  He became the 15th quarterback to ever throw for 35,000 yards.  Jason Campbell looks a lot better this year.  He has yet to throw a pick.  Mike Martz will be a head coach again next year after the 49ers continue to put up big numbers despite JT O’Sullivan.  FIRE MATT MILLEN!  Felix Jones is certainly on a better team, but he’s been better than Darren McFadden.

You Want Amanda Beard? Stalk her!- Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard claims stalking is the way to a woman’s heart. “Believe me, a bit of stalking works,” she told OK! magazine. “Women want to be pursued. When the police get involved, you know you’re doing something right.”

Crocodile Hunter’s son wants his own show– Two years after the freak accident that caused Steve Irwin’s death, his 4 year old son Bob is hoping for his own television show, reports the New York Post. In a segment of a popular Australian newsmagazine “60 Minutes”, Bob is seen taking after Dad, wrestling a crocodile, cradling reptiles and filming a potential TV pilot. Terri Irwin reportedly reiterates that her children have “normal” lives in the “60 Minutes” piece.

Fidel More of a Ladies Man than Wilt?- Fidel Castro makes Wilt Chamberlain seem lame. While the NBA legend bragged he’d bedded 20,000 women, the Cuban dictator slept with 35,000, according to an upcoming documentary. “He slept with at least two women a day for more than four decades – one for lunch and one for supper. Sometimes he even ordered one for breakfast,” an ex-Castro official named “Ramon” tells filmmaker Ian Halperin. — NY Post

Sun Belt Wants BCS Money- Florida International turned down an offer of $1.2 million to play at an SEC team next year. And Sun Belt Commissioner Wright Waters told the conference’s athletic directors not to even consider an offer to play a road game against a BCS conference team for less than $1 million. “A million is cheap to those guys,” Waters said. “They ought to be paying us $2 million.” — South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Carroll vs. Neuheisel- The margin of defeat in Rick Neuheisel’s first loss as UCLA’s coach, you may have heard, was 59 points. . . . Pete Carroll’s 14 losses at USC have been by a combined 59 points. — LA Times

Fergie, Michelle Obama top best-dressed list  Reuters- She fills two converted bedrooms with clothes and maybe that’s why Fergie made People magazine’s 2008 list of best dressed women. “I don’t like to throw anything away,” Fergie said about the clothes. Joining Fergie in the top 10 list were actresses Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron and Eva Mendes. Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez, singer Rihanna and supermodel Heidi Klum also made the list. Rounding out the top 10 was Michelle Obama, who was given high marks for a look that was “classic and confident.”
