Tigers “D” Very Dissapointing

Filed under: Uncategorized — Greg Gaston @ 4:46 pm

Look, I expected some issues in the opener, but I didn’t expect the Tigers Defense to look like they had no clue in several situations. Tim Walton’s defense will get better, it will get more aggressive, but there is a point when you have to look at the players and not the scheme.

Ole Miss finally has a multi-dimensional offense, and they exposed some of the Tigers weaknesses such as lack of intensity from the secondary, and an inability to keep opponents from turning the corners and heading up field. There was also a point in the second half when Ole Miss Freshman tailback Brandon Bolden powered through the line, bringing back nightmares of Chris Johnson, Kevin Smith and Matt Forte.

I don’t think the team as a whole through up a clunker. In fact, they did some things pretty well. That should make for some optimism once Conference play begins this weekend. However if the defense can’t recognize oddities, like the “Wild Rebel”, and contain mighty mites like Dexter McCluster, than more problems lie ahead. Half of the battle is recognition, than reaction. If that comes after the guy with the ball is 20 yards down field, than game over.
