This & That

Filed under: Uncategorized — Greg Gaston @ 6:52 pm

Although it’s considered the real slow time of the year in local sports, there is seemingly a little bit of everything going on….

The field is now set for the Stanford St. Jude Championship (Which has always been one of my favorite local sporting events). The line-up is solid with Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els and Davis Love III being the big names. Local Favorite John Daly and 2-time winner David Toms are also part of the event. Unfortunately, Tiger and Phil are not in Memphis, nor are some of the young guns like Adam Scott and Luke Donald. Still should be another top notch event.

The Grizzlies top brass will return from Orlando and the NBA Pre-Draft Camp Saturday. Team officials are refuting reports that the organization is having a tough time getting some of the top draft candidates to come into Memphis for individual workouts. (The Grizzlies have the #5 Pick). Director of Scouting Tony Barone Jr. told me and Eli Friday that the problem with scheduling is that certain players don’t want to go up against other players, while still others would rather be the only one at the workout. All this makes for scheduling conflicts and therefore the Grizz won’t begin their individual workouts until Thursday June 5th. (Always subject to change).

The Tigers and their friends from Conference USA are reportedly having a good time on their trip to China. They are sightseeing, learning a little bit about an entirely different culture and of course hooping it up. As of this posting, Team C-USA has dropped a pair of close games to the Chinese National Team, which is nothing to be ashamed of. Take this into consideration, the C-USA guys practiced one day in Memphis before flying to China to play. They had to adapt to International Rules and play a team that’s been together for quite some time plus is playing at home. Doneal Mack seems to be shooting the ball well while Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier continue to show their importance to the Tigers. Prediction………Dozier returns to Memphis.

The Cardinals have called up Joe Mather and was in their lineup Friday night. Chris Duncan was sent to the Redbirds to get things straightened out. Duncan’s been slumping at the plate, and I think some of that has to do with his adventures in the field. I havn’t seen a guy play defense that bad since Lonnie “Skates” Smith, a former Cardinal. Oh sorry Cubs fans, I mean Alfonso Soriano. Oh by the way, I am a fan of Redbirds G.M. Dave Chase, but if he really thinks an affiliation with anyone other than the Cards would work as well, he’s mistaken. The Redbirds and Cardinals need to continue the relationship. It’s fan appealing for the Redbirds, and for the Cardinals, it’s their product in a major market. which is extremely important.

Well that’s all for now. If I’m feeling better I’ll see you at Italian Fest, if not, I’ll catch some of you next week at TPC Southwind.
