This-n-That, plus some Bird Feed

Yeah I’ve been slacking off on the blogging for a bit, but I’m back now. I’ve had graduation, the family has come and gone, and now I’m busy workin’ and doin’ all the fun stuff for for Sports 56 WHBQ. Anyway I’ve got some random bits of information I’m gonna just throw out there so here we go. One: I’m sorta sick of the speculation on the Grizzlies draft, considering nobody (or almost nobody) knows where they will be selecting. Of course, by the time y’all read this and this passes the editing phases we will all know where they pick and thus can make our speculations with a bit more substance.

Another idea i will touch on to greater length at some point in one of my Bleacher Report Articles (). Is the Pac-10 football conference. I dont discount that they have some talent, not as much as the SEC mind you, but they have a bit outside of USC in teams like Cal, Oregon, and other schools. Still, what is their deal? They don’t have any exclusive national tv coverage or really any coverage that isn’t excluded to the West Coast. The SEC has CBS, the Big Ten has ESPN, the ACC and Big 12 both have ABC, and the Big East has at least put a lot of its premier games on ESPN Thursday nights. Yet the Pac 10’s only coverage seems to either be on Saturday nights at 11 at night or in some West Coast “Special” which is special in that only people out there can see it, and nobody east of the Mississippi.

Ryan Howard is another subject. Sure he has started slow the past two years and managed to heat up as the weather also got warmer. But there are a few factors which have added to my frustration with Howard: 1.) He’s bitching about his contract and how he wants security. He already was awarded $10 million in arbitration (which by the way is a joke) and well, he already has 65 strike outs and is hitting JUST .187. That strike out total puts him on pace for, oh, 229. That’s lousy. OOOOH, so he can hit a home run twice every ten plate appearances, and strikes out the other 8 trips to the plate. I guess i shouldn’t complain b/c he could always be grouding into double plays. 2.) I’m a PHILLY fan folks. Patience is a virtue and, well, in case you’ve not noticed us the past 23 years and 98 season without a title, WE DON’T HAVE PATIENCE. Okay, i have some, especially for the rookies of our teams, but if you’ve making $10 million, WE WANT PRODUCTION.

Speaking of Production, or the lack of production, How BAD did the Penguins make the Flyers look? Terrible if you ask me. Pittsburgh looked much faster than Philly and has immense depth. The Flyers have toughness and are physical, but the old saying remains true even in hockey: You can’t teach speed. The Pens are solid now because they were horrid for 4 seasons, and had the No. 1 or 2 pick to obtain Marc-Andre Fleury, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal. Do we have that patience in Philly to suck for that long so we can obtain such solid picks in any sport? Ughhh, did you read the previous paragraph?

What’s with these publications: Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, and Sports Weekly? I know they’re all sports magazines, but can they come up with some different articles? Apparently not. SI and SN both have articles on Kobe. SN and Sports Weekly both have pieces on the Falcons and Chase Utley.

Birdfeed: So it’s starting to get hot again huh? Already? I guess this is the start of muggy, humid weather for the next 4 months…..I was surprised to see Kasey Kahne win the All-Star race Saturday, he’s been bad for this year (just like last) and it just seems like Dodge is a step or two behind Toyota, Ford, and Chevy right now. I’ll have more musings on this later…It seemed like every time the Hornets made a move last night, the Spurs had an answer. That’s a good veteran team for you….I’m wondering how the Lito Sheppard contract issues will resolve….that’s also another thought for another time.
